Most are unaware they have it.

Lipoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition where there’s an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs, thighs and buttocks, and sometimes in the arms.  The cause of lipoedema is unknown; however, there is evidence of hormonal and hereditary influences. Many people with lipoedema have a family history of similarly enlarged legs.

Symptoms:

  • Legs/arms can be extremely painful, even to touch

  • Lumpy nodular fat texture

  • Feet and hands are exempt and a 'bracelet' effect can appear just above the ankles and wrists

  • Skin hypothermia

  • Easy bruising affected limbs

  • Hypermobility

  • May develop secondary lymphoedema

Treatment:

  • Massage – Manual lymphatic drainage helps to improve your mobility and move the fluids from the affected area

  • Compression – Increase lymph flow, reduces pain and heaviness

  • Exercise – low impact exercise programme to build muscle tone

  • Diet – Anti–inflammatory eating

  • Liposuction

  • Psychosocial support
