Lipoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition where there’s an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs, thighs and buttocks, and sometimes in the arms. The cause of lipoedema is unknown; however, there is evidence of hormonal and hereditary influences. Many people with lipoedema have a family history of similarly enlarged legs.
Symptoms:
Legs/arms can be extremely painful, even to touch
Lumpy nodular fat texture
Feet and hands are exempt and a 'bracelet' effect can appear just above the ankles and wrists
Skin hypothermia
Easy bruising affected limbs
Hypermobility
May develop secondary lymphoedema
Treatment:
Massage – Manual lymphatic drainage helps to improve your mobility and move the fluids from the affected area
Compression – Increase lymph flow, reduces pain and heaviness
Exercise – low impact exercise programme to build muscle tone
Diet – Anti–inflammatory eating
Liposuction
