What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in the interstitial tissue and manifests itself as chronic swelling. Lymphoedema is caused by a compromised or damaged lymphatic system. Lymphoedema can be present from Birth (Primary Lymphedema) or develops as a result of damage to, or dysfunction of the lymphatic system associated with surgery or radiation treatment for cancer, Trauma and injury. (Secondary Lymphedema). Lymphedema is mostly seen in arms and legs but also in genitals, face etc.

With consultation, the therapist will take measurements of the affected area, determine the right garment and order it for you.

Lymphedema patients have a high risk of infection (Cellulitis) in the affected area which is why a high level of hygiene and skincare is essential.
